My opponent in the just-ended Guild Election, Jon Schleuss, brought a lot of passion and commitment to the Guild in his campaign. It was hard fought. Yes, I disagreed with his attacks on me, but I understood it was part of the politics.
I have heard the concerns and about our current situation. We are planning digital town hall meetings soon (and regularly) to begin a discussion with all activists. We already have strong commitments from CWA to help resolve some of our challenges.
I ask Jon, his supporters and all members to weigh in. I especially need Jon’s help in building unity. We face formidable foes. We face some very bad owners, some reasonably good owners (only a couple of them in the truly good category) and an industry that continues to struggle to find a business model. Meanwhile we must ramp up our historic organizing, deliver the other 40 percent of first contracts we have left unfinished and reach out to our allies in our fight for sustainable quality journalism with quality jobs. Oh, and let’s help reign in Facebook and Google please. They don’t deserve 80 percent of all new digital ad revenue.
We all share these goals and I ask for your help now in building the unity we need to get there.
In Solidarity, Bernie Lunzer
