As TNG Secretary-Treasurer, I spent the last 5 1/2 years of my media/union career side-by-side with Bernie Lunzer at headquarters in Washington, D.C. Our jobs were sometimes difficult, but more often rewarding, as we helped members, locals and the Sector realize the goals we set for ourselves.
As budgets tightened, we battled CWA to maintain funding for staff, programs and services TNG members needed more than ever. We weren’t always completely successful, but it was the respect Bernie commanded in CWA’s hierarchy that got us what we needed.
Under Bernie’s leadership, TNG set an example as a progressive, positive-thinking, problem-solving union in the media industry and the labor movement. He recognized that we had to step up and assume active roles in CWA – representing our women, minority, Next Gen and commercial members. And, it was equally important to engage CWA in global free press issues.
I served on the Sector Executive Council for 30 years under four Presidents. That might be more experience with the administration of our union than anyone in the Guild can claim. The President of TNG has to have a vision for the union and work every day to make it a reality. I have only found one person with those qualifications – Bernie Lunzer.
Bernie lives and breathes the Guild. He protects the benefits our longtime members enjoy and provides the welcoming home our newly organized members deserve.
