More than 60 organizing victories in recent years. Coordinated bargaining resulting in a “global settlement” that improved wages and protected health benefits at 16 properties owned by GateHouse Media. A public campaign to reveal the brutal management of newspapers by a hedge fund. Another campaign to advocate for pay equity for women and minorities.
And all this while contributing as a vice president on the CWA board and managing a staff working across the country to bargain solid contracts in an era when journalism is in economic and political crosshairs.
That’s just some of the progress that The NewsGuild-CWA has achieved under the leadership of President Bernie Lunzer. And they’re also just a few of the reasons that I not only support Bernie but that I’m running on a ticket with him for the third time.
And it’s why I’m asking you to vote for Bernie in this second election for TNG president.
None of this is to say that Bernie and I always understand each other. He once told me that I was the second-most cynical person he knew. I was annoyed – I wanted to know who was first and what I had to do to be No. 1. But that’s merely indicative of one of Bernie’s best qualities – that he can work with people of all temperaments, including us cynical folks – as long as we are all working for the Guild’s success.
Bernie has the record of the success that proves he earns another term as TNG president. I ask you to vote for him and let the Guild to continue its successes in the more traditional areas of organizing and collective bargaining and the newer ones of public campaigns. We need Bernie to lead TNG, and TNG and the CWA need Bernie.
