Martha Waggoner – International Chair
When you look at Bernie Lunzer, you should also look at the people around him. Bernie has always run now just with women, but with strong, forceful women. He has selected Carol Rothman, Connie Knox, Marian Needham and to run with him at one time or another as candidates for executive vice president (previously secretary-treasurer) and international chair.
And the Executive Committee members that have worked with Bernie also reflect an effortless diversity. He doesn’t nominate the vice presidents, but he supports people of color and women, and they are naturally drawn to him because they know he supports them.
My first clear recollection of Bernie happened at the 2006 CWA convention, when I asked him if the then-Newspaper Guild would sponsor me for the Harvard Trade Union Program. I was an officer in my local, the News Media Guild, and might have been on a bargaining committee, but I was really green at union work overall. Bernie must have seen potential in me – not clearly visible to everyone – because he agreed.
This is my third time running on a ticket with Bernie, and I am proud to do so. During these years, The NewsGuild-CWA has had its ups and downs along with the media industry. We are now in a period of new organizing that is rejuvenating both journalists and TNG and is due to Bernie’s leadership and to the leaders and staff with whom he surrounds himself.
But the organizing is the public face of the union. Being president of an international requires so much more, such as serving as a pension trustee and as a CWA vice president. TNG also must sign off on all new contracts, and that requires a deep understanding of the language and history of previous contracts.
I endorse Bernie because he has experience and the proven ability to handle a volatile media landscape. Let’s ensure that good work continues and re-elect Bernie Lunzer!
