REELECT BERNIE LUNZER, NEWSGUILD PRESIDENT
Bernie Lunzer is piloting the NewsGuild through challenging but hopeful times. During Bernie’s last four-year term, the NewsGuild established 63 new units with 3,274 employees and potential new members.
This achievement reflects the organizing prowess and hunger for change by the working journalists and activists in these units. But this unprecedented growth happened under Bernie’s leadership and with the assistance of his team.
One of Bernie’s most significant achievements is the introduction of chain bargaining. The NewsGuild is bargaining with Digital First Media, Gatehouse, and the Tribune Company for all of its newspapers at once, rather than paper by paper. This allows NewsGuild to magnify its power, in the same way industrial unions have in the past bargained for all of a companies factories at once, rather than factory by factory.
Bernie has guided the NewsGuild through initiatives brought before the CWA that would weaken us as a sector and diminish our identity. The NewsGuild and several other sectors emerged from the CWA Convention this July stronger than ever. Bernie also helped to reduce the cuts proposed for the Strategic Industry Fund to finance other CWA priorities. He and his team have been adept at obtaining grants from the SIF, and was able to use that funding to replace four field staff and bring on a consultant to help with communications.
This has gone a long way toward alleviating some of the budget cuts imposed on all sectors by the CWA, and the attendant staff cuts.
Bernie has produced results. He has brought progress. Let’s give him another four years to keep us moving forward.
